A low environmental impact lobster harvesting pilot using regenerative materials.
Objectives and Ambition
This initiative sees collaboration between heritage committees, fish producer organisations, local fishermen and even as far as onshore restaurateurs who see the commercial value in the sustainable nature of the catch.
Rooted in heritage and culture, the Low Impact Fisheries Pilot co-development and testing of willow or wooden lobster pots tracking of commercial, ecological, and social viability including catch efficiency and environmental impact.
This demonstrates that the fishing community are conscious of and taking responsibility for the ecological footprint of their operations and has the opportunity to prove that produce with a managed footprint can command a higher price on the market.
The ambition for this initiative is that it also informs the national DMAPs with MPA management and assure tenure and thus the future of small-scale fisheries.
